We did school on Christmas day

Open Source Learning at its best

Open Source Learning at its best

But shhhhhhhh! Don’t tell Daniel!  This is him soaking up all things telephone from the hand of an amazing  recognized Telephone Historian expert, Jim.

Daniel first met Mr. Jim and his lovely wife Laurel when we were antiquing a few years ago.  He picked up their business card from their antique phone display and called them to inquire of their phones.

And in true Daniel fashion, he invited them over to our home.  Since that time, these two have literally spent hours discussing the science and history of phones.

Of all the gifts we saw on Christmas Day….this is the one that stirs my heart the most.  It is the gift of curiosity.  The gift of wisdom from another generation.  The gift of knowledge.  Amazing stuff.

When it came time to leave, Mr. Jim could hardly get out the door as their spirited discussion continued.

Education is not rocket science.  It’s as simple as allowing your kids time to explore their interests and passions and then allowing for connections like the one with Mr. Jim to happen.  John Taylor Gatto, former public school teacher and NY state teacher of the year calls this “Open source learning.”

I call it: Amazing.
